My driver’s side wiper has excessive play on it, meaning half the time it actually slaps OFF my windshield when the wipers are on! I can’t seem to find anything I can adjust, tightening the lower nut has yielded no results...

The only solution is to buy a new car.

If it’s anything like my Subaru that had the same issue; underneath the cowl when you get to all the linkages for the wipers, the plastic bushings are shot. Depending on the car you can find them at any auto store

The only solution is autonomous wipers

Your bushings are worn.

This happened with my pontiac grand Prix. I solved the problem by trading the car in on a sunny day.

If you remove the entire wiper arm from the stud, it should look like this:(maybe toyotas are different?)
But the teeth may be worn

Vertical play or horizontal? I don’t know if any of these can be helpful, but sometimes crud builds up on the spindle and raises it higher than it should be. Mine was hitting off the hood. In my case I was able to shim the spindle deeper into the cowl. Not sure if that is similar to your problem from how you described it.

The bushings in the wiper transmission under the cowl are worn
